The Campaign: to challenge and change community perceptions and attitudes towards people living with invisible disabilities.
By increasing community awareness, these individuals will gain a greater sense of acceptance, inclusivity and respect.
We want you to JOIN US as we bring change to our respective communities and beyond. By providing us with your email address, we will keep you updated with the movement and what you can do to help us take it further.
Additionally, we have included social images for you to download and share (see below) with your community. When sharing, make sure you include our hashtag #thinkoutsidethechair.
Again, thank you from all of us for partnering as a community to bring necessary change through inclusion and respect.
How Can I Get Involved
1. Use Your Voice.
Donate your social media space. By posting on any or all of your platforms you help us spread the word. Every post makes a difference.
2. Download and post our Poster.
Here’s a creative idea that will really help us.
- Put it on a noticeboard somewhere (with permission) at your workplace, local library, shopping mall, church, community hall or school (the brag wall, the back of the toilet door, or the most prominent place where your office mates gather).
- Take a selfie and post it on your social platform of choice, use the #thinkoutsidethechair hashtag.
3. Share Your Story.
Our campaign wouldn't be as powerful if the people most affected stayed silent. If you are somebody with an invisible disability, and you have been abused or treated wrongfully simply because people can't see that you've been struggling. We would love to hear your story. Please email email@example.com
4. Get Your Workplace Involved
We are now taking orders for bumper stickers and other promotional material to partner with us. We will be offering corporate sponsorship packages, as well as individual orders. Spread the word! Please email firstname.lastname@example.org
5. We would love for you to follow us on Facebook and Instagram.
Again, a simple way to demonstrate your support and by helping us build some critical mass and that what’s it takes to create a movement. So, give us a Like, a Follow and we will do our best to follow back and share the love.

#ThinkOutsideTheChair is a collaborative Central Coast movement and campaign designed to challenge and change the current thinking around disabilities. Not all disabilities are visible and we need to change our thinking in this space. Our campaign name, Think Outside the Chair is an effort to see beyond the physical indicators of disability, seeking to inform, engage and educate the community to see all Australians live harmoniously in communities that celebrate inclusion and diversity. The idea of the campaign came from Marni Walkerden. Marni not only works in the disability space through Ability Links but knows and understands what it’s like living with her own disability. “People living with disabilities have a lot to consider when they venture out into the community, sometimes it’s negotiating parking spots and sometimes it’s the availability of bathrooms. The abuse that can happen on a daily basis is at times unbearable. To add abuse on top of what they need to accomplish makes everyday living challenging and can become isolating”, Marni says. The abuse and confrontations that can occur sometimes mean staying at home is easier than going out and trying to feel included in the community.
“We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference.” Nelson Mandela
